The Basic Science of Deglutition: Application to the Clinical World

As clinicians, we learn the basic science of swallowing in school, through reading, and attending conferences. We, however, frequently do not apply this basic science knowledge to our clinical practice. In this Food for Thought article, I will review a few ways that we can incorporate the neurology, anatomy, and physiology of swallowing into our practice and, I hope, persuade readers that it is critical to keep abreast of basic science research in normal and disordered swallowing.
